Dry vs. Dehydrated: What’s the Difference?

At Namaka, our main agenda is to deliver happy skin. And we believe happy skin is hydrated skin.

Dealing with dry or dehydrated skin accelerates the aging process, not to mention it's just no way to live. Let's dive into what the difference is between dehydrated and dry, and easy fixes to keep your canvas fully hydrated and refreshed.

Dehydrated skin 101

Dehydrated skin is an unfortunate skin condition that takes place when, quite literally, there’s a lack of water in the skin. This can happen to anyone, regardless of skin type — even people with oily or combination skin can still experience issues with dehydration. Key indicators of dehydrated skin are a dull-looking surface along with premature signs of aging, like surface wrinkles and loss of elasticity. Other indicators you might also notice include:

  • Itchiness

  • Skin dullness

  • Darker under-eye circles, or tired eye appearance

  • More sensitive fine lines and wrinkles

How to treat dehydrated skin

Drinking your fair share of water throughout the day is one helpful way to tackle dehydrated skin. However, our skin is the largest organ in our bodies, so it’s equally important to use top-quality ingredients that will lock in moisture and keep the skin hydrated. Apply moisturizers or serums that contain hyaluronic acid (HA) is a great trick, since this skincare all-star ingredient is particularly great at keeping water in the skin. When it comes to hydration, our HA-packed KAI Face Moisturizer formula locks in much-needed moisture for up to 72 hours, leaving you with a stronger, firmer skin barrier.

Dry skin 101

On the other hand, when it comes to dry skin, water isn’t the problem. Dry skin is simply a skin type, like oily or combination skin, where the skin lacks oils or lipids, so it takes on a flakier, dry appearance. If your skin type is dry, you may also notice:

  • White flakes

  • Redness or irritation

  • Scaly appearance

  • Increased incidence of psoriasis, eczema, or dermatitis
